How my approach is different
I am a business coach who specializes in working with established business owners who are committed to making a difference. They are individuals who have an important message to communicate and a history of success but have reached a crossroads and are unsure how to proceed.
If you are like most of my clients, chances are you are smart, very competent at your profession, and highly motivated. You also know something remarkable is emerging yet are unsure exactly what it is or how to clarify it.
When you work with me you can expect to have the opportunity to fully talk out what you envision for your business. If this is the first time anyone has truly listened to the dream you have for your business this process could be transformational.
Within in the context of a foundational business-planning model we will look deeply at your business from all angles. This long view will provide you with clarity on what has been holding you back and what needs to be done to overcome it.
Who I work with
I work with a wide variety of business owners who have a deep commitment to making a positive difference in the world but have not yet achieved the impact and income they know is possible.
They are solopreneurs and small partnerships in fields such as consulting, coaching, healthcare, and education. They have found work that provides them deep personal satisfaction and that also improves the lives of their clients and their communities.
One client said, “Now that I have experienced what it means to be fully aligned with my work I can’t not do it.” Actually, she has tried to let go of her business a few times, but was drawn back because her experience of working with her clients was so profound.
What all my clients have in common is a shared motivation to make the world a better place through their life-changing work.
But, if you are reading this, it’s also likely that you’re feeling one or more of the following:
- Frustration because you work hard but aren’t meeting the goals you have set for yourself
- Unsure of exactly what it will take to create the income, impact, and fulfillment you know is possible—and that you’re called to pursue
- A vague sense you’re missing a vital ingredient of success that, if you could only see it, you would have what it takes to reach your goals
- Ineffective because you have an important message that is not being heard
Take a look at what was true for some of my clients when we first started working together.
“I have been in business for years. I love my work. But despite all the programs I have taken and all the great advice I have received, I can’t seem to create a steady stream of the right clients. What am I missing?”
“My consulting firm has been very successful based on one long-term client who will complete her work with me in 18 months. I am starting to feel a bit panicky. I don’t know where to start to attract new business.”
“I am brand new to business, but it is something I have wanted to do for a very long time. Where do I start?”
“I retired a couple years ago and have made a big commitment to my new business. It is working, maybe a bit too well. It is somewhat out of control—I have said yes to too many things and need help reining things in.”
“I started my business a couple of years ago and it is doing fairly well. I have a very ambitious vision, which honestly I have not told anyone. I am afraid they will think it sounds crazy and too grandiose. Could you hear me out and let me know what you think?”
You are likely to be successful working with me if you:
- Come to your work with a high degree of integrity, personal responsibility, and self-awareness
- Know that true success is about more than money
- Understand that creating the business you envision will take time and you are ready to learn new things and take the necessary actions to increase your income and impact
- Have an important message to convey through your work
- Appreciate the innovative and “out of the box” solutions that arise from a collaborative and creative process
What you can expect from working with me
- To never again feel the uncertainty you’re now feeling
Uncertainty is a form of immobilization that comes from not having the tools to know what to do next. Through The Discovery Program you will learn a foundational business-planning model that you will use the rest of your career.
- To have a plan of action that you can confidently implement
The plan we create will be a living and breathing plan of action—not a stuffy old to-do list that someone else derived. It is one that you and I custom design for you.
- To clearly communicate your message so you feel heard and seen
You are in business, in part, because you have an important message to convey. I will help you put words to your innate wisdom and then create marketing material that emphasizes it.
- To know your business will be in alignment with your strengths and values
A key part of my work is to help you clarify how you are distinctive and what matters most to you—then work with you to design these key parts into the core of your business.
The beliefs that guide my work
- A little “eccentric” is welcome
More important than what others think of your idea is the perseverance and common sense you bring to making it a reality. I have seen a lot of seemingly eccentric ideas become wildly successful. So, anyone who truly takes his or her work seriously can create just about anything. It won’t be quick or easy, but it is certainly possible.
- Your inner guidance has a place at the table
When making decisions, we will give as much weight to your values, intuition, and inspiration as we do the logic and structures we think of as business principles. This balanced approach is fundamental to creating a successful business that honors your values.
- Days filled with activities you love are essential
Yes, that is right—follow you bliss. A business life filled with activities that you are naturally good at and that you love to do IS a key to success. These innate, intangible talents are your strengths. They are what make you unique and what your clients most value. Besides, life is too short to spend it doing a whole lot of “should do” stuff.
- True success is about more than money
Let’s not pretend: Life is meaningful when it includes quality time with others, abundant health, and creative pursuits in addition to financial security.
- Lean into your community
You know how important quality relationships are to your life. This is equally true for your business. Regular interaction with others brings fresh perspectives, making the handling of difficult tasks less challenging and reducing the isolation that small-business owners sometimes experience.
